The View

Hello and welcome back to the 12th installment of my series, Beyond the Image, where I share the story behind the house featured in Super Finnish’s marketing. In this series, I take you through the inspiration, the five and a half months of building, and where the house stands today.

In this post, I want to dive a little deeper into one of the most important aspects of the property: the view. It’s something I’ve always dreamed of, and I hope you enjoy hearing about it!

Beyond the Image: Part 12

After the chilling vibes from my last post, I thought we could warm things up by focusing on one of the key elements of the project: the view! In Finland, many people opt to build by a lake or the sea. But for me, I wanted something different - something that offered long, uninterrupted views over fields and forests.

When I first saw the property I later bought and built on, it felt almost surreal. It was exactly what I had envisioned in my mind, a true moment of manifestation coming to life. The sweeping views of fields and forests gave me a deep sense of calm, much like the calmness I find by water. But to keep maintenance simple, I knew a property with a field and forest view would be the perfect choice. After all, managing a beach property in Finland can be quite a lot of work!

I think I stood right here for about an hour, just admiring the view. It was exactly what I had dreamed of - long-reaching views over fields and forests.

Why a Far-Reaching View Matters

There’s something deeply calming about being able to see far into the distance. I’m not sure if it’s because there’s always something new to discover, but the more I look at this view, the more details I find. It keeps my mind engaged during moments of stillness, allowing me to simply exist in the moment, fully immersed in the beauty around me.

A view like this adds a new layer of interest with its ever-changing colors. In the spring, the landscape bursts into fresh green. Summer brings depth and richness to the hues, while fall transforms the scene with fiery reds, oranges, and yellows. Winter, however, adds a layer of magic, turning the entire view into a winter wonderland.

These days, it's rare to experience winters like this, but it’s still possible. My first winter here was pretty extreme, and because of that, it was incredibly beautiful.

Positioning the Buildings to Capture the View

When it came to the placement of the buildings, it was the view that mattered most. It was essential for both the main house and the sauna building to share in the beauty of this natural canvas. I carefully angled the buildings so that both could enjoy the best views nature has to offer.

Since the property is fairly large, I don’t have to worry about anyone building in front of me and blocking the view. Local building regulations also prevent construction on the fields, which is a relief in many ways and ensures the view stays clear for years to come.

The buildings are positioned to capture the best view from every space in both buildings. As you can see, the sauna building is angled differently to maximize the view for both structures.

A Future Dream: A Nature Retreat

Looking ahead, I have a dream of building a small retreat closer to the fields - a place where people can stay and experience nature up close. It would be my own little haven, a spot I could escape to myself, as well. Because of the unique shape of the property (an hourglass shape), I’d be able to position this retreat so it’s hidden from the view of the main house and sauna.

One day, I’ll build a small retreat with no electricity or water, located close to the fields. It will be a little hideaway for myself, but also available for others to enjoy.

But for now, my focus is on helping others build their own dreams. There will be time for all the wild building ventures I have in mind for this special place. For now, I’m just grateful to call this beautiful spot in Finland my home. Nature has a way of offering its best, no matter the season, and the view is always stunning.
